TALAT

Meliá Barajas joins a practice now standard for all hotels

A hotel in 229 rooms strategically located near the airport, with more than 10 meeting rooms for corporate events.

The challenge? modernize its facilities while maintaining operability and optimizing energy consumption without compromising guest comfort.

At Talat we understand that each hotel has its own particular DNA. The Meliá Barajas, with its focus on corporate events and airport proximity, required solutions that other hotels do not need. For example, a flexible schedule for events outside of standard hours and the ability to quickly adapt to different room configurations.

The proposed integral solution could be summarized in the following three points:

  1. INTELLIGENT AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM
  • Variable flow rate in rooms and circuit of the C wing
  • Frequency inverters in circulator pumps. With this, we could adjust to the hotel's actual occupancy pattern based on variable occupancy, differentiated demand and a need for 24/7 flexibility.
  • 2-way valves in fan coils (replacement of traditional 3-way fan coils)
  • Differential pressure probes for operating point optimization

STRATEGIC HEAT RECOVERY

  • Implementation of air-conditioning units with heat recovery in common areas
  • Intelligent heat exchangeThe exhaust air preconditions the inlet air.
  • ResultIn summer, the air does not enter at 40°C but pre-cooled, reducing the air conditioning load.
  1. SELF-CONSUMPTION PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM
  • 45.8 kWp peak power
  • 86 modules of 545 Wp distributed in 6 strings
  • Estimated annual generation71,964.48 kWh
  • Optimized locationHotel roof for maximum utilization

In summary, what was the impact of this proposal?

🏴BEFOREFixed flow air-conditioning system + No heat recovery + Total dependence on mains electricity supply

🏳️ AFTER:

  • Consumption reduction in circulating pumps
  • Thermal utilization of the exhaust air
  • Own generation of 71,964 kWh/year
  • Operational flexibility according to actual demand

This project is a declaration of intent towards the future of the hotel industry:

  1. Self-consumption of energy as standard, not as an option
  2. Adaptive systems optimizing according to actual use
  3. Thermal recovery as a basic design principle
  4. Technology integration without compromising the user experience

With this, Meliá Barajas becomes a hotel that not only reduces its energy bill, but also positions itself as a benchmark in hotel sustainability.
