Flying pool, floating pool, infinity pool, sky pool... there are several names used to refer to these spectacular pools that are, by themselves, a real attraction. Their installation in hotels makes the difference, turning these establishments into places of reference that not only offer a stay with the highest standards of quality, but also a unique experience.

An example of this is the hotel Iberostar Bahía de Palmawhere we worked on the expansion and renovation project that included the construction of its overhanging pool. This overhanging pool overlooking the sea is one of the details with which to give personality to the hotelThis added value enabled the establishment to qualify for a higher category.

Characteristics of cantilevered pools

Overhanging pools are those that are located suspended in the air completely or partially. They are true engineering marvels, but their complex construction means that most of the world's aboveground pools only have a floating part. Even so, later we will see an example of a flying pool, in this case located in a residential complex, which is only attached at the ends, remaining completely suspended despite its large dimensions.

They are sometimes thought of as "flying pools" because they give the sensation of flying, but in reality, this name refers to the fact that its construction is carried out on a cantilever, a part of a structure that protrudes from it. The overhang can be the whole pool or only a part of it; in any case, it is only supported on one side, the rest of this structural element is "floating", so it gives the sensation of swimming in the air. For this reason, especially if they are pools that overlook the sea, we talk about infinity poolsThe pools are seemingly limitless, although this type of rimless pool does not necessarily have to be a flying pool.

In flying pools, especially if they are for hotels that want to offer a more impactful experience, materials such as clear acrylicat least on the floor or one of the walls of the pool. Thus, it reinforces the feeling that the pool blends into the space, is fully integrated into the environment.

Examples of cantilevered pools

If we are talking about flying pools, it is worth mentioning the Embassy Gardens Sky Pool in London. Although it opened in 2021, the development of the project began in 2013. After overcoming more than a few setbacks, this 30-meter-high cantilevered pool, which connects two residential buildings in the English capital 25 meters apart, was finally opened to the public. For its construction, large acrylic panels were linked together to form a single, completely transparent piece of polymer about 35 cm thick. In total, the cantilevered pool structure weighs about 55,338 kg and can hold about 150,000 liters of water.

The London Sky Pool stands out for its spectacular nature, as it is 25 meters of transparent pool that is attached only at the ends, incorporating its corners on the terraces of the buildings it connects. That is why it is known as the first floating pool of the world, because the whole pool is actually suspended in the air.

Other examples, however, stand out for their size. This is the case of the largest flying pool in Europe, which is located in a leisure area in Murcia. The Olímpicawhich is how this cantilevered pool is known, is 30 meters high. Of its 42 meters in length, 22 are cantilevered; in this case, it is a concrete structure, although it has a circular gazebo at the bottom of the pool of 1 '5 m in diameter that is transparent.

TALAT projects: Iberostar Bahia de Palma's flying pool

In the case of the overflow pool at the hotel Iberostar Bahía de PalmaWe are proud to have been able to take care of the Project Management of what is the first swimming pool of these characteristics in the Balearic Islands.

The Bahia de Palma's infinity pool is located on the rooftop with sky view, so it offers that feeling of having no limits of infinity pools. In addition, part of the bottom of the pool is transparent, so you can see the garden below while swimming. It is a floating pool on a covered floor with a bar, which allows you to enjoy this rooftop overlooking the bay for longer, not only as a bathing area.

The refurbishment of the Bahia de Palma, which included the construction of the cantilevered swimming pool, allowed this hotel to qualify for 4-star superior status. The project also included the expansion to 202 rooms and the remodeling of common areas and spa. In addition to the coordination and management of the project, we were also in charge of the direction of its material execution, including the coordination of the Health and Safety area and the quality control.

This is one of the many projects we have done to improve hotel facilities of all kinds, from large complexes to small boutique hotels with unique and original proposals. We adapt to any proposal; we listen to our clients and develop customized solutions so that their project becomes a reality in the most efficient way. Tell us your idea and we will help you shape it.
